About Us

Support for Domestic Violence Victims

Saoirse Women’s Refuge was born from 12 years of tireless campaigning, led by our founding member, Pam O’Connor. The goal was to create a safe place for women and children escaping domestic violence. In 2006, we achieved this with the opening of our first refuge in Tallaght. This was made possible thanks to South Dublin County Council, which provided the building, and funding from Tusla’s Domestic, Sexual, and Gender-Based Violence department. The refuge was officially opened in December 2006 by then-President of Ireland, Mary McAleese.

Growth and Expansion

Our journey continued through economic challenges, and by 2019, we reached a significant milestone by opening a second refuge in Rathcoole. This expansion allowed us to serve more families in need. The new refuge was inaugurated in November 2019 by the Minister for Children & Youth Affairs, Katherine Zappone. With the addition of the Rathcoole refuge, we also extended our outreach, prevention services, and child support services, creating a broader and more robust Saoirse Domestic Violence Services (SDVS).

Our Vision

Our vision is a society where domestic violence and abuse are never tolerated or silenced, empowering women and children to live in safety, free from fear.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide life-saving and life-changing support to women and children, guiding them toward safety and recovery. We offer accommodation and specialist services, engage with communities to challenge domestic violence, and advocate for broader social and legislative change.

Our Values

Our core values are Courage, Empathy, Empowerment, Hope, and Integrity. These principles guide every aspect of our work at SDVS, shaping our interactions, business planning, and daily practices as we support and advocate for women and children.

Domestic Violence Awareness Services

We are committed to creating a world where everyone can live without fear, with a focus on empowering women and children to rebuild their lives.

We Believe That...

No one should endure abuse or suffer torment from a “loved one.” No one deserves the burden of blame, shame, or judgment imposed by an abuser. We believe that early education about healthy relationships is crucial to prevent domestic violence and break the cycle for future generations.

We Acknowledge That...

Domestic violence is a severe and life-destroying crime, for which the victim is never responsible. It typically escalates over time and affects people of all classes, creeds, ages, and races. Domestic violence involves an unequal balance of power in intimate relationships and can manifest as physical, sexual, emotional, psychological, or financial abuse, as well as coercive control.

We Commit To...

We commit to empowering our clients to have their voices heard. We listen, believe, and respect those seeking our help, whether they are leaving an abusive relationship or need support to stay safe within it. We work in a non-judgmental and confidential manner, following the Children First Guidelines and Legislation 2017 to ensure safety and privacy.

Testimonials

Empowering clients to speak up and be heard is at the core of our mission. We offer non-judgmental support, respecting each individual’s experience. Here is what our clients have to say about us.

Our team consists of approximately 50 dedicated staff across various services, including Refuge and Helpline Support, Outreach, Court Accompaniment, and Childcare.
