Oireachtas Joint Committee on Justice

Allison Graham, CEO of Saoirse Domestic Violence Services was invited to present to the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Justice, on Wednesday 3rd November 2021 on the topic of ‘Women’s shelters / domestic violence refuges’Safe Ireland, Women’s Aid and Men’s Aid also gave evidence.

This was an important opportunity for the issue of domestic violence and the severe shortage of refuge accommodation to be discussed in this political forum. With only 144 refuge spaces available across the entire country, to women and children fleeing domestic violence, the sector is critically under-resourced and unable to respond adequately to the growing demand for crisis accommodation.

In 2020, SDVS was unable to accommodate 369 requests for refuge. That equates to us not been able to offer safe shelter to 78% of the requests in that year alone and these figures sadly reflect our experience, since we opened in 2006.
